Transitional Kindergarten (TK)
Background Information
Legislation recently passed requiring school districts to offer Transitional Kindergarten (TK) to all 4-year-old children by the 2025-26 school year. This expansion will be accomplished by a phase-in model that will increase the birth date eligibility each year leading up to the 2025-26 school year. For the 2023-24 school year, any child who turns five between September 2, 2023, and April 2, 2024, will be eligible. If your child turns five prior to September 1, 2023, he/she will be eligible for Kindergarten.
About Transitional Kindergarten (TK) at Hemet Unified
TK is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program. Students attend TK for one year and then begin Kindergarten the following school year. The TK curriculum teaches the CA Preschool Foundations in preparation for the kindergarten standards. The TK program gives students an additional opportunity to continue to build their skills and abilities. Their time in TK will help them to succeed in Kindergarten, become leaders in the classroom, and confidently navigate the school day routine.
TK is part of the public school system and is free to participating students. Additionally, students enrolled in TK may be eligible for transportation to and from school as well as after school and summer school programs. Registration in the program is optional.
