HUSD proudly supports the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program across multiple schools, with a mission to close the opportunity gap and prepare all students for college readiness and success in a global society. The program helps students overcome challenges, build confidence, and develop perseverance, key traits for academic and life success.
The AVID academic elective, which meets daily, focuses on writing as a tool for learning and helps students master inquiry and collaboration skills. The three main components of the program include academic instruction, small-group tutorial support, and motivational activities. AVID students engage in goal-setting, research projects, Socratic seminars, and critical reading strategies.
With an impressive 99% graduation rate for AVID students last year, 96% of participants applied to a four-year college or university, and 89% were accepted. AVID students also maintained an average GPA of 3.55, reflecting the program’s success in fostering academic excellence and college readiness.
This impactful program is in place at all traditional middle and most high school sites. Notably, both Dartmouth and Rancho Viejo Middle Schools as well as West Valley HS have been recognized as National Demonstration Schools for their excellence in implementing AVID. Additionally, Diamond Valley has been recognized as a Site of Distinction.
