HUSD’s Ballet Folklórico program, which launched in the 2023-24 school year, has quickly become a popular offering, more than doubling its enrollment in just one year. Starting with 70 students across three high schools, the program now proudly serves 158 students. Open to all high school students, the program provides an opportunity for participants to explore and celebrate the rich history and traditions of Mexican culture through dance.
“The students have shown an incredible amount of commitment and enthusiasm for all things Folklórico! They love the costumes, the music, learning the dances, and interacting with each other, their teachers, and the audience,” stated Tina Batchelder, HUSD Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts. The positive response from the students reflects the program’s success in providing an engaging and culturally enriching experience.
Through Folklórico, students have the chance to connect with their heritage, build confidence, and engage with the broader community. The program offers numerous performance opportunities that celebrate the district’s diverse population and encourage community participation.
Looking ahead, HUSD is excited about the potential growth of the program, including the possibility of adding more sections to accommodate increasing interest. The future of Ballet Folklórico at HUSD looks bright, with continued growth on the horizon.
Mariachi classes are now available at West Valley and Tahquitz High Schools in the 2024-25 school year, further expanding the district’s cultural arts programs.
